Lake Wylie
Lake Wylie is a reservoir or man-made lake in the U.S. states of South Carolina and North Carolina. The lake has a surface area of and features of shoreline. History The man-made lake was first formed when the Catawba Power Company built the Catawba Dam and Power Plant near India Hook, South Carolina in 1904. This dam impounded the Catawba River and created Lake Catawba, which was utilized to create hydro-electric power. In 1905, the Catawba Power Company became part of the Southern Power Company. In 1924, the Southern Power Company raised the level of the dam and built the new Catawba Hydroelectric Station to replace the original. This facility opened in August 1925, increasing the surface area of Lake Catawba from 668 acres (2.70 km2) to 13,400 acres (54.2 km2). The Southern Power Company was merged with Duke Power Company in 1927. McDowell Nature Preserve
McDowell Nature Preserve, formerly known as McDowell Park, is a city park and nature preserve in southwestern Charlotte, North Carolina on the shores of Lake Wylie. The park features forested hiking trails, rental campsites, fishing, boat access and a nature center. History Mecklenburg County opened Lake Wylie Park, its first county park, in 1967. Like McDowell Park it was located on Lake Wylie and offered swimming and boat access to the lake. However, Lake Wylie Park was developed on land leased to the county by Duke Power and in 1971 Duke asked to end the lease in order to develop part of the Carowinds amusement park on it. Duke donated the land that eventually became McDowell Park to the county to replace Lake Wylie Park. McDowell Park opened on October 29, 1976 and was named after John McDowell, a former chairman of the Mecklenburg Recreation Commission and supporter of the county's efforts to develop parks along Lake Wylie. Buster Boyd Bridge
The Buster Boyd Bridge is a four-lane automobile bridge spanning the Catawba River/Lake Wylie between Lake Wylie, York County, South Carolina and Steele Creek, Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. The bridge carries/connects SC 49 and NC 49, which is utilized by mostly local traffic. A sidewalk, along the east facing side of the bridge, provides pedestrian access. Allen Steam Station
G. G. Allen Steam Station was a 1.140 GW coal-fired electricity generating facility, located in South Point Township, Gaston County, North Carolina, on man-made Lake Wylie (part of the Catawba River). Units 1 and 2 (165 MW each) began operating in 1957; units 3, 4, and 5 (275 MW each) in 1959, 1960, and 1961 respectively. Named for George Garland Allen, a former president and first chairman of the board for Duke Power, the Allen facility is the only Duke Energy station with five units under one roof. The plant is equipped with a flue-gas desulfurization system, completed in 2009, that decreases the air emissions coming from the plant. Catawba Nuclear Generating Station
The Catawba Nuclear Station is a nuclear power plant located on a peninsula, called "Concord Peninsula", that reaches out into Lake Wylie, in York, South Carolina, US. Catawba utilizes a pair of Westinghouse four-loop pressurized water reactors. As a part of the Megatons to Megawatts Program Catawba was one of the plants that received and tested 4 fuel assemblies containing MOX fuel with the plutonium supplied from old weapons programs. Because concerns of nuclear proliferation are greater with fuel containing plutonium, special precautions and added security were used around the new fuel. The four test assemblies did not perform as expected and at present those plans are shelved.
